Reopening Ontario, Step 2: FAQ

Ontario is moving to Step 2 of the Reopening Ontario plan on Wednesday, June 30, except for Waterloo Region which has seen a rise in cases involving variants of concern.

Reopening Ontario Roadmap, Step 2

We have been receiving a few questions over and over recently, so instead of giving the same answer over and over in an increasingly unintentionally-terse manner, we want to address them all here.

Courses

All PAL/RPAL, Hunter’s Ed, PPC and other courses remain suspended until we get the go-ahead to start them up again from the regulatory organizations which administer them. This might come during Step 2, it might come during Step 3, or it might come even later than that. We don’t know for sure.

We can add your name to our waiting list if you want. We are several months behind because of the extended lockdowns and stay-home orders, and we do not know when courses can resume. It will be late fall at the earliest before we get through our list, and probably longer than that.

We believe that all CFSC instructors have a similar backlog they have to work through, and will have similar wait lists. You are encouraged to call around.

The Range

The range remains closed to members until Step 3.

As far as we know, Step 3 should come at the end of July (on or around the 21st). Given the Ontario government’s ability to stick to its own timelines, this is subject to change at any time. We will make announcements on our social media and update our calendar here when we know FOR SURE when we can reopen.

When we do finally re-open, it will be “full blast” - 24/7 for members, guest passes available for non-members during staffed hours, no appointments needed.

Memberships

We are accepting new members and are nowhere near our membership cap, but we caution against signing up for a new membership until we have a clear and concrete date for reopening the range. If you simply have to sign up right now, while you can’t use the range and before we have a clearly defined reopening date, we can do that.

For existing members, we haven’t been chasing down lapsed memberships during the lockdown. Once we have a commitment for a re-opening date, a friendly reminder email will be sent out to anyone whose memberships came due since April. The club has had near zero income since April, and operating expenses have continued to accrue.

The Pro Shop

We can have up to 2 people in the store at a time in Step 2. No appointment needed, come in during staffed hours.

We will be sticking with reduced hours during Step 2:

  • Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 4pm - 8pm

  • Saturday & Sunday 12pm - 4pm

There is simply not enough business to warrant longer store hours while the range remains closed down. We will go back to full hours when we reach Step 3.

Curbside pickup is a permanent option for those who need it.

Shooting Packages

We have had to suspend these packages during the COVID crisis. They are not practicable for us while we are expected to enforce safe social distancing and enhanced hygiene practices. Firearms are difficult to keep sanitized in a way that doesn’t damage them, disposable gloves don’t work well with handling guns, and all instruction must necessarily be within arm’s reach for the safety of everyone involved.

Unfortunately, this means we won’t be offering shooting packages or hosting range parties for the foreseeable future. We will revisit this service at some point down the road, but it’s not available for now.

Our “Range Gun” system is still available for licensed customers who want to try out different in-stock guns before buying.
